Significant Online Outage Impacts Numerous Online Platforms and Apps
A large-scale internet outage has impacted dozens websites and mobile apps around the world, with users noting problems getting online following issues at Amazonâs online infrastructure platform.
The affected services include Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed platforms including its key e-commerce site and the Ring doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of problems reaching the HM Revenue and Customs website on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, several Ring customers turned to social media to state their doorbells were failing.
Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of issues on individual platforms reached the thousands for each app.
The company stated that the issue originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at the cloud division, a unit that supplies essential online backbone for many businesses, who rent out space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting service.
Shortly after late night (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced âincreased failure rates and slowdownsâ for AWS services in a zone on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect appeared to disrupt apps globally, with the problem monitoring service showing outages with the same sites in different parts of the world.
Ciscoâs Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a surge in issues on that morning, including several cases found in the Virginia area, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the outage originated.
