Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Criticizes Union Leader for ‘Trump’s Courtesan’ Statement
Giorgia Meloni has sharply criticized the chief of the major Italian trade union after the official referred to Meloni as the “courtesan” of ex-President Donald Trump.
Background of the Controversial Remarks
Maurizio Landini, the head of the CGIL union, issued the comment in a televised interview this Tuesday. This came just after world leaders, including Meloni, participated in a peace conference for the Middle East in Egypt.
The union leader accused Meloni of “not having lifted a finger” to secure peace in Gaza, saying her participation was restricted to “acting as Trump’s courtesan”. Luckily, citizens of Italy protested to protect the dignity and honour of the nation,” he said.
Meloni’s Response
On her social media accounts on Thursday, Meloni declared that the union chief was obviously obscured by growing bitterness (which is understandable)”. She proceeded to post a explanation of the expression “courtesan”.
“In my opinion most people are aware the primary definition attributed to this expression, but, for the benefit of anyone unfamiliar, I’m publishing the top definition found through a simple web search,” the Prime Minister stated, providing a screenshot that said: “Woman of easy virtue, heterosexual; euphemism, escort.”
Meloni further condemned her leftwing opponents, observing that for a long time they had admonished us on gender equality” only to then disparage a female leader by “labeling her a prostitute”.
Response from Landini
Replying to the post, Landini maintained that there were “no gender-based slurs” directed at the Prime Minister and that the term was meant to imply “Trump’s lackey”.
Via a released message, he clarified: “In a 10-minute interview, that is publicly available, to clarify any confusion or exploitation of the term, I immediately clarified my intended meaning – that Meloni was on the coat tails of Trump, she was in Trump’s circle, she was Trump’s lackey.”
Ties Between Meloni and Trump
Meloni has consistently maintained cordial connections with President Trump. During a speech in Egypt, Trump addressed the Italian Prime Minister – the only woman present at the summit – and complimented her beauty. “Across America, this could be career-ending,” he remarked. “However, I will risk it. Is it alright if I state you are beautiful? Since you are genuinely beautiful.”
President Trump afterwards lauded Meloni as “an inspiration to all” in reference to the English version of her book, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which features a preface by Trump’s son.
Earlier Controversies
In August, the Prime Minister reacted strongly after learning that altered images of Meloni and other well-known Italian females had been posted on a explicit platform, expressing her disgust, and offering “solidarity and support to every woman who have been insulted, offended, and abused”.
