Crew Member Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
